A very good item for those wanting to start playing bagpipes or for those who want a fun instrument to play on.
A rarity in the U.S., this Hümmelchen, a set of German smallpipes (cylindrical bore), is from the maker Steffen Fischer. Chanter, blowpipe, done and stocks are all pear wood. Bag is nice suede leather. Chanter plays C-major and D-minor (Dorian), with single drone in D.
Fingering is open “German” fingering, that is to say, it is identical to the recorder you learned to play in school. The sound is soft and pleasant and is easy to master. Lift a finger up, the tone goes up. Bb is possible with a cross fingering to allow for playing tunes in F-major:
C-D-E-F-G-A-Bb-B-C-D
The set is approximately 8 years old, I am the second owner, and there is one minor ding on the upper piece of the drone. I re-seasoned the bag in February 2022, so it is completely air tight.
Reeds are synthetic and in good working order.
