I have my father’s set of 1930 – 1950 James Robertson Bagpipes (Edinburgh) for sale.
Ron Bowen took a look at this set and helped identify them as a second generation of Robertson pipes as they changed from the very early and severely angular profiles to this style with tuning chambers having straight sides. These were made during James Martin’s tenure as shop foreman for the pipemaker. The last generation had convex or bulging sides to the tuning chamber and were made while George Kilgour was foreman. The set includes a vintage wood R.G. Hardie (Glasgow) chanter.
The silver could be full silver or silver plate, I am unsure. That can be tested or you can have someone take a closer look at the caps and ferrules. I have tested them with a magnet and they are definitely silver from the strong magnetic cling, I’m just not sure if that’s all the way through the material or a plating. Very unique engraving pattern on the silver.
This set was loved and enjoyed for many years by my father, but have not been played in a long time, so they will need some TLC when it comes to cap fittings and re-hemping from the dryness. Also, the bag is most likely unplayable, so it will need updated, but I decided not to sell as just sticks and stocks. You will get the entire contents of the pipe case which includes some antique cane drone reeds and the original wood case.
