This set of late 1930s-early 1940s African Blackwood full ivory Lawrie bagpipe has been completely refurbished by master Thomas Doucet.
It is in amazing condition. Thomas invisibly whipped one tenor top and the blowstick. You can really only see the difference under UV light (see image with the weird blueish-purple colouring).
The only condition comment is a small piece out of the ivory ferrule on the chanter stock. There is another anomaly that I have seen on other Lawries of this vintage, and that is the bead on the blowstick is different than the others. The beading and combing are all consistent with the set but for some reason that part is different. This was true of the set Jim McGillivray just recently sold of an almost identical bagpipe. I have also seen this same anomaly on another identical set.
These pipes come tied in to a nearly new extended small size Lee and Sons cowhide bag. The bag is tied on the traditional way but has a zipper for easy access to the interior of the bag.
It also comes with brand new custom (short) Canning tenor reeds and a custom Kinnaird Evolution bass. This vintage of bagpipe wants to tune a bit low on the pins so the short reeds compensate to get them tuning a bit higher up. It has no negative affect on the sound.
The reed seats have been tapered for a nice secure drone fit.
These pipes have a good provenance. Getting a CITES permit for international travel should be fairly straightforward.
These pipes come set up and ready to play. Just add a chanter! I can include an ABW McCallum McC2 for an extra $200. That chanter is a bit flatter and complements these pipes beautifully.
I will also include a can and a half of Airtight seasoning. If shipping I wouldn’t include the open can — just to be safe.
Also included is a dark green velvet bag cover and dark green “silk” cords.
Not included: the chanter shown in the photos is not included. In fact, I no longer have it.
Please let me know if you have any questions. If you are in the GTA come give them a test drive — you won’t be disappointed! I can provide audio clips only if you promise not to judge my playing.
Will ship anywhere in Canada. Outside of Canada: shipping is possible but it will take a while to get a CITES permit. Due to the good provenance and authentication, getting a permit won’t be a problem.
