Thow bagpipes. Exact age unknown. Great sound. No hurry to sell, but figured I’d see what the interest was here. Details below:
They had been refurbished decades ago in the UK, but arrived to me mid-2020 in rough shape: multiple damaged mounts, a number of hairline cracks underneath ferrules, etc.
I sent the pipes to Lee and Sons for a total refurb, i.e. strip and refinish, repair all hairline cracks, and full remount in holly. A brass-lined ABW blowpipe was made to match the set, and a poly split-stock was remounted in holly in addition to wood BP stock. (I’ll provide both.) Brass rings added beneath ferrules to prevent future issues here. No work was done or required on the bores.
The tenor tops and bass top and mid-joint are cocus. The rest of the pipe is almost certainly ABW. Scribe lines on cord guides and a bead above bass cord guide are right in line with Thow, as is the general profile of the drones, etc. I am aware that there was quite a bit of variation between Thow sets, but that these items are (almost!) always present.
Been playing these routinely since Nov 2020, with regular oilings, stored in humidity-controlled case, etc. Big sound with lots of harmonics, leaning toward the tenor-dominant side of the spectrum. Stable and easy to set up at a modern pitch (I have tried Kinnaird, Redwood, EZ, MG, cane…no problems). Can share audio and more photos if interested. Recent success with these in online solo contests.
