Ian Murray M6 2002 vintage silver & imitation ivory bagpipes in the MacDougall style
Ian Murray of Forfar, Angus, Scotland, has been making pipes in the tradition of Duncan MacDougall of Aberfeldy. His bagpipes are produced from African Blackwood from Tanzania. Projection mounts and drone bushings are made from imitation ivory. Ferrules, drone cap rings, slides and chanter sole are made of .925 hand engraved sterling silver with a thistle motif.
Ian Murray’s pipes are notable for their attention to detail with bold deep combs and beading, mirror-like bores and beautiful tone. Craftsmanship on the premium African blackwood has an elegant profile and is fine fitting. The exquisite silver hand engraving is done in Scotland with an Edinburgh hallmark.
Murray bagpipes are truly elegant in both their workmanship and tone with a full, sweet drone sounding like old MacDougalls from the 1890s.
Ian Murray bagpipes are hand-made and hand-finished with a fine wax sheen. No varnish or lacquer is used on Murray bagpipes.

The story of these pipes is they belonged to a Vancouver Highland shop whose stock was liquidated after closing, In 2012, the owner had repairs by Dunbar’s done to cracks in bass stock and bass drone bottom . I’ve owned them since 2014 without any issues. These pipes are well maintained with routine oiling and cleaning. In appearance, they are flawless without scratches, chips or dings.
The pipes come with a short original blowpipe with a silver sleeved mouthpiece, original Murray pipe chanter with matching silver engraved sole, airtight clean L&M Scotia hybrid zipper bag, new clean bottle water trap and black cords.
A spare poly Gibson pipe chanter is included for day to day piping.
Reason for selling. Rather than ‘blingy’ or flashy, these pipes are stately in appearance and sound. I reserved these for special occasions like funerals or weddings. Now due to physical limitations, I would like to pass these on to an appreciative piper.
