This is a very curious instrument; it is certainly the work of R.G. Hardie, however, this example produces a sound and performance more similar to a classic Henderson/Lawrie.
The bass bottom is a later replacement – though also by RGH, and mounted in ivory. This section has a narrow bore and was certainly added to enhance the performance of the drone (strike in, tuning position etc). The bass stock is also a replacement, and the chanter stock, whilst it appears to be a perfect match, it has an imitation ivory ferrule.
Aesthetic anomalies aside, this is a fine instrument that would stand out on any stage, though it is perhaps particularly suited to band work, or for someone who desires a rich, room-filling sound, preferring a bright pitch.
My test setup features full Eezeedrone drone reeds, a Naill chanter with a MacPhee reed, and a bannatyne bag fitted with the Dri-Flo moisture system.
