Antique full Ivory Bagpipes.
This set was found in a shed demolition in the 1950’s and was tracked back to a WW1 soldier killed on the Somme in 1915 His family had always thought his pipes were destroyed when he was killed but they were found in the old shed wrapped in oil cloth.
They were inspected and valued by Albert Sheath who was a bagpipe maker who emigrated to NZ in the late 1950’s and who had been a wood and ivory turner and manager in both RG Lawrie and P Henderson prior to emigrating . He apparently said they were made by RG Lawrie prior to 1880 when he was deciding on the design of pipes he was going to sell under his own name.Sheath said he had seen an identical set in Glasgow in the 1940’s which had been bought from Lawrie in 1879 and there was a receipt for payment for same. Quality instrument, the ivory is in outstanding condition.
