Beautiful 1930’s era Henry Stark bagpipe. Turned from African Blackwood with nickel ferrules and imitation caps. Purchased from Ross MacKenzie at Source Bagpipes over in Scotland. The set was refinished at some point in the past and the drone caps replaced with imitation ivory. I’ve not played these as I have another vintage set I’m keen on playing and so these are for sale. These have seen definite use over the decades and so are not pristine. A few hairline cracks were repaired and the condition of the wood, while still solid, has some great character.
According to Ross, these were made for a retailer, likely a gentleman by the name of AP Sykes who was an importer of musical instruments. There are no stamps on the set, but the profile and beading & combing say Starck.
Henry Starck made a beautiful instrument and was an innovator as well. His work is highly underestimated. I would put his work up there at the top echelon of makers.
Sold as sticks and stocks. No blowpipe, bag or chanter.
