Uilleann pipes perfect beginner setup – A “practice set” with a David Daye “apartment” chanter, Tim Benson budget bellows and stocks, and a Kelleher bag, with a RoadRunner carrying bag.
The Daye “apartment” chanter is slightly smaller bore than most other chanters and is a tad bit quieter – ideal for living in an apartment, being kind to housemates, or for not commanding a session. Still loud enough to play in a session with just a bit of the edge taken off. Plays and sounds very nicely, original reed, excellent pressure balance. This is the upgraded model with the black plastic outer layer over the brass tubing innards.
Tim Benson made the bellows (his budget model) and they work great. He also 3D printed the stocks. Will include an extra length of tubing so that the bellows can be adapted to fit the girth of the player.
The bag is a recycled Kelleher bag, patched from where a mainstock used to be inserted and the bag is nicely airtight and the patch hardly noticeable. I use a similarly patched Kelleher bag for session playing all the time and its great.
Finally, a RoadRunner ukulele gig bag, which fits the set to a T and makes for easy and compact transport and protection.
I can provide more photos and a video showing how the set sounds and its volume compared to a normal wide-bore chanter.
