Duncan Soutar DS-1 with nickel slides for sale. This is a set of pipes I recently refurbished that are great for a beginner or someone looking for an ABW set that is affordable. I purchased these drones from Harvey Ritch at Everything Scottish in 2000. They have been played very little, as it was a bit too much effort for a 15 year-old to keep two sets of pipes going, and they have been in a closet for nearly 24 years now.
I oiled the pipes a few times over the years with pharmaceutical grade almond oil. As you can see from the pictures, the drones are in great condition. The wood was recently polished with oil and the mounts polished. The bores of the drones are very straight (see pictures) and the pipe is not likely to warp or change at this point. Only blemish is a chipped projecting mount on the middle base drone piece (pictured). It’s glued back together and isn’t noticeable without close insepction.
I made two recordings of the drones for you to hear how they sound. I was playing MG reeds with a Bennett Sheepskin Bag and an RJM ABW chanter in the recordings. The drones were easy to get in tune and had a rather large sweet spot on them, which was surprising. The sweet spot was quite a bit larger than MacCallum’s or my Glen’s. Overall, I would say the drone sound is full and sweet. The tenor drones are forward and the bass is very present. No reason why these drones can’t win prizes. Feel of the pipe is sturdy and they are very attractive on the shoulder.
Price for the sticks is $600. For $650, I’ll also include a Tuxedo pipe case, drone chords, a Soutar ABW chanter, a chanter reed (either an Apps, G1, or Chesney depending on what sounds best), and a set of drone reeds (pictured, can’t remember the make). Buyer pays shipping or you can pick them up somewhere nearby in North Georgia. International buyers, add 2.5% to offset PayPal’s currency fee.
