I’m selling this on behalf of a friend – he was told that this is the ‘McGillivray’ tartan – but I don’t think that it is – it’s ‘close’ though…no matter, really – it’s an attractive and striking sett in the ‘Modern’ palette.
the cloth is an 18 ounce ‘hard tartan’ (is of worsted wool and has a very tight weave and a stiff ‘hand’) and has a proper ‘kilting’ selvedge – which is increasingly rare these days as I know of no mill other than DC Dalgliesh who still offers this quality – in fact this may well be Dalgliesh cloth.
This kilt is exceptionally well-made, even by my standards – I’m a Bespoke kiltmaker who is rarely impressed with the work of other shops. I haven’t opened up the lining to inspect the internal canvas, but I’m impressed by everything that I DO see here. There’s an undated “Burnett’s & Struth” label sewn to the lining – but the address listed is a Post Office Box which might narrow down the date of manufacture.
Condition is VG+. with no damage or fading to the tartan cloth. the leather straps are a bit dry but show no sign of incipient failure, and the lining is in good condition with no sign of wear or stain.
the creases of the pleats are sharp and show no sign of being mistreated by a dry-cleaning shop.
Waist = 39″, Hip = 45″ Length = 24 1/2″ , length from bottom of kilt to centre of buckle = 22 1/4″.
