Set of Scottish Smallpipes, originally made by Ian Kinnear of Edzell, Scotland.
This is a combination set in A and D. There are four drones and one drone extension piece, so that the drones can be tuned to either A or D. The set also comes with two chanters: one in A, one in D. However, these chanters are a little bit special: each one has additional keys, extending the range a little:
- The chanter in A has two additional keys, adding the notes B and C at the top of the register.
- The chanter in D has one additional key, adding the note E at the top of the register.
The set is made from African Blackwood, fully mounted with Cocobolo mounts and stainless steel ferrules. There is also a drone switch on the drone stock, enabling the player to switch on/off the drones as required. The bag is made from cowhide, with a synthetic coating: it does not require seasoning.
A brand new set from Ian Kinnear would cost around £2500 (£2140 for a standard A/D combination set, plus around £350 for the chanter and drone switch modifications).
This set is in excellent condition, and has been very well maintained. It also comes with a very handy ‘Kilter’ bagpipe case. These retail for around £80 in the UK. The case is constructed from a high-density foam, covered in tear-proof polyester fabric, and has a full velvet lining. On the lid is a large zipped pocket: perfect for maintenance accessories, music etc. The bag has twin carrying handles and a detachable shoulder strap.
These smallpipes are a joy to play and have a beautiful tone, ideal for both solo or session playing.
