Mid-Century Lawrie Bagpipe Practice Chanter.
Excellent gift or purchase for entry level or professional piper. Extra chanters are always nice to have on hand for travel and impromptu practice.
19” overall length
Lawrie name stamp present but faint.
Traditional ‘standard’ finger hole spacing (e.g., not a ‘long’ chanter.
African Blackwood (ABW) construction for both chanter and chanter top. No splits or cracks! Nice dark, straight grain.
Note: At some point, a previous owner applied an awful and thick polyurethane finish. That poly has been removed and finish is now polished wax with a top coat of Renaissance Wax. Has a nice smooth feel.
Chanter body is straight with NO warping. Hemp combing on tenon is perfect condition and new waxed yellow hemp has been wrapped. Old small clip on edge of tenon hemp retainer ridge.
Finger holes show use and no carving (e.g., no countersunk holes).
Reed seat in good condition.
Original white sole present and in good condition.
New old stock mouthpiece in good condition …no teeth nibbles.
Original tapered nickel ferrule has spun bead and closed end.
Includes new Q1 chanter reed.
Overall…Good, typical tone and plays in tune. A few tiny dents here and there from use…not abuse.
Does not include a case. Back in the day, practice chanters never came with a case.
