SOLDFor auction is a Vintage Argyll Sutherland Piper’s Dirk, made and stamped in Scotland in 1972. This Bagpiper’s Dirk would have been standard issue for the Scottish Regiments, this for the ASH (Argyll Sutherland Highlanders). The dirk measures 19″ in length in the scabbard. The crown depicted on the top of the hilt is a Queen’s crown, and the blade is stamped F.E. and J.R Hopkinson, Ltd Sheffield England. I found the name of this firm on their business listed as a cutlery and tool maker on “OldMilitaryMarkings.co/brit.” as makers of Scottish knives and dirks amongst other various tools and items. The markings on the back of the metalwork strapping read ASH52 (Argyll Sutherland Highlanders), then the number 973-6900 stamped into the metal fitting along with the date 1972. Also stamped are the initials R.A. in an oval and the word ” Scotland”. Scratched into the fitting is the broad Arrow marking. The scribed markings being made by the appropriate regiment upon receiving the dirks.
The handle is made of native Scottish bogwood with traditional metal studs in the handle to allow a firm grip on the handle. There is a shallow scratch on the wood head, it is not a crack. The blade does not have a sharp edge, which is typical of Piper’s dirks. The blade is in very good condition, without the heavy staining or pitting that you regularly find.
This is a British Made Dirk showing military markings and not your typical East Indian made dirk. I have been a collector of British and Scottish Military for 40 years, now having sold off most of my items.
