Unique set that would go well for someone who wants an affordable unique set with a hint of history and mystery.
Essentially unused set of 1980s era pipes made by Charles/Charlie Smith of Aberdeen, son of Charlie Smith (pipe maker through the 1950s who had quite a piping career and rubbed elbows with some of the greats, and possibly was a Gold Medalist? Hard to tell. There might have been two Charlie Smiths?)
Either way. These were definitely made by his son in the 1980s. Maybe one of the last sets he turned as the original owner had to talk him into making a set. There’s a little history to them, but not as much had they been made by the father. While Mr. Smith the elder worked for Lawrie at one point, I believe these are more likely styled after Henderson, assuming his son turned them similarly. But this is all conjecture from what little info is out there.
They are essentially unused and have sat idle since the 80s. I thoroughly cleaned them, oiled them, and rehemped them. There are what I would describe as some small tears/stress fractures in two of the nickle (?) ferrules. I do not believe they are silver, but they were quite tarnished as they’d been untouched for decades. Case included. No bag or any other tidbits included other than what’s in the pictures. Including the spare old school sheepskin flapper valve. Just cause it’s fun.
They sound great to me. I fully assembled them and I’ve got a quick and dirty sound recording I made on my phone I can share.
