Calling all eccentric “Drone-Head Pipers!”
Up for sale is my unique, rather large “Smallpipe” set in African Blackwood.
The top quality chanter in “A” and most of the drones were made by the gifted pipe-maker Alan Waldron of Stirling Bagpipes.
Because this set has 6 drones, not 3, you can happily play in A or D and the minors thereof.
For example in “D” (which the video shows) your pipes will sound a bit like the Northumbrian pipes with you adding the “D” drone(s) and closing the “E” drone(s)…
Each drone has a plug for the end and most have another plug and hole to provide a higher note for added harmonies.
I put this set together over the years and despite my hand-made work it is absolutely air-tight and plays very easily.
Everything stays in tune for months and you will play beautifully with a fiddler or guitarist by your side.
Personally I really like a strap with the drones over my right shoulder so there is not a lot of extra motion as you move the bellows. You will see that I have fitted a very small brass tube in the chanter-stock to act as an air-stop key. This way you can silence the chanter and tune or change the drone setting. Also as I am an Uilleann piper I have added a plastic circle with holes on the bottom of the chanter so that I can play more comfortably with it resting on my knee.
Apologies, but this set does not come with a bellows, but they are easily found on eBay.
The pipes will be boxed carefully in bubble wrap and a strong cardboard box, and I will pay the delivery charge.
Many thanks for reading and best of luck finding your own lovely Smallpipe set.
p.s. If you are interested I have two one-minute videos I can email to you. Cheers!
