We have for sale a very nice set of vintage Peter Henderson bagpipes.
This set was given to the current owner’s grandfather [Jim Banks] by his parents in 1903 when he was aged ten in Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland.
It is uncertain if they were new at the time or second hand.
Jim played these pipes ever since and after moving to New Zealand in 1922 became a successful solo competitor in the 1930s and 1940s, before joining and leading pipe bands in both the South and North Island of NZ.
This set has been in the same family for 118 years.
The set is a Henderson set. Not marked, but inspected and verified by experts around the world.
Fitted out in nickel and ivory. Nickel ferrules have been re-soldered and re-plated. Complete set, minus the original chanter, but with an ivory soled Hardie chanter. All parts are free of cracks and straight.
Some very minor chips on the top drone rings but hardly noticeable. Projecting mounts are all spotless. Great patina on most of the ivory pieces. Some colour variation between the mounts.
It looks like all drone parts and blowpipe are original. Some stocks appear to be replacements and appear to be Lawrie. The chanter with ivory sole is an RG Hardie (and looks uncarved).
The set is currently ready to play, fitted with a Ross bag, new cover and new Crozier carbon reeds. It is playing fine and sounds superb. These pipes have had a gentle tidy up (cleaning and oiling) and all joints have been rehemped.
Over the last 6 months they have been carefully brought back into playing condition. And the sound may improve further with more regular playing.
The pipes can come packed in the original wooden box.
The current owner is putting these pipes on the market with an asking price of $4,800 USD and is welcoming near offers.
Nobody in the family plays at present and a set like this should be played.
I’m happy to add more pictures if required. Just ask what you would like to see.
I am helping the family to move these to a new home. These are not my pipes.
